The first elections to the Sharjah Consultative Council will begin on January 30 and last for two days. Those elected to the 21 seats will serve a four-year term.

The Sharjah Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, in June announced that half the consultative council would be elected, with the other 21 seats filled by Ruler appointees.

Six seats are for Sharjah city citizens, while nine seats are distributed evenly between Al Dhaid, Khor Fakkan and Kalba. There are two seats for Dibba Al Hisn, while Al Hamriya, Al Batayeh, Mleiha and Al Madam have one seat each.

Potential candidates must be citizens of Sharjah, at least 25 years of age, of good standing in the community with no criminal record and be able to read and write.

Sharjah citizens who want to vote need to register in their hometown and be at least 21 years old. Registration for candidacy takes place for three days from December 27.

Mansoor bin Nassar, head of the higher committee for Sharjah Consultative Council elections, urged citizens to participate in the vote.

“This is the first local elections to happen in the country, and we urge Sharjah citizens to register for voting and candidacy,” he said.

The council, established in 1999, ended its final session for the current term in June.

Council members are responsible for implementing proposals for all matters referred to the council by the Ruler of Sharjah.

The final list of new council members will be announced on February 11 next year.
